DAY 6 - CANBERRA TRIP 2012

· First off I’d like to say, “Hey mum, cheese”. This morning we woke up at 6:00! Arggh. I was so tired and cold, again!!! We went to breaky and had sausages........yum.......Anyway we got in the bus and we drove and drove then we finally got to Old Parliament House and it was awesome. We watched a video which was quite interesting and we did our own debate and election which was cool. Then we went to the new Parliament House and I thought it was going to be weird......but it was actually quite interesting. We did another session of parliament and it was so funny, Matt was wearing a funny dress and he looked so strange. All up it was a really cool but long day. Going to the snow tomorrow! So excited!!! Missing you all and talk to you soon. Bye for now Love Jazz (Jazmin Begley)

· Today at parliament house, the old one, it was fun. At the education centre we learnt stuff about elections and we voted for different fruits. I represented ORANGE but I was disappointed when APPLE won since I hate apples! At the centre I got to look on computers at the national electoral role and got to learn some of the middle names of my relatives!! Hehehe! I got to run the debate in a pretend parliament sitting and also to count an electoral ballot box. Also hello Louise my awesome mum! Aebel Dunchue.

Hi, just like to say “Hey Viv, Tony, Eva and Ngat”! Now back to the point of my story. Today we went to visit the AEC (Australian Electoral Commission) where we learnt how our country, Australia, became a ‘representative democracy’. To my surprise, I was actually turned in. The history that we learnt in a power point was actually very fascinating. Discovering the story, of how Australia came to be, was interesting. They designed the power point to keep us entertained with 3D action and animated figures to make it seem realistic. After the power point, we started on challenging games that quizzed us on voting and Australia’s representative democracy. We got to put the election of fruits in action. (I was a polling booth official and I took my job very seriously, I made Pastor Pete tell me the truth about whether he had voted in this election before) Love Nesha xx (1st part)

We later travelled to the Old Parliament House, where we received a guide to lead the group. The tour guide put enthusiasm into his speech which got us straight into it. We debated against whether a Tasmanian river should be created into a dam or if nature should be left along. (We were against the idea!) We both had supporting points but in the end we won!!! Yey!! After that we went to the ‘New’ Parliament House. We put on a play as if we were the House of Reps. We had loads of fun! It was a day to remember! Love Nesha xx J (part 2)

Teachers Blog
Congratulation is in order for all out students today! Our students were dressed, in school uniform, and prepared for a day of information overload. Their mock elections at the AEC brought many factions together but alas ‘Apple’ was again elected by yr7 2012.
Uniforms, manners and best behaviour were on display throughout all the buildings and events today. The whole team has truly represented you as parents and as a school as a whole at a very high level. This is measured by the CCC standing at a whopping 28 after a day of ‘Thank you’s’ from random strangers that we have had positive contact with. The guide for the old parliament house tour made a comment that we have added to the impression he gets that the WA schools are always enjoyable to have; this is from a man that runs 4-5 school groups through each day! That compliment could almost be counted for 2 it was so good!!!
Another great place we visited today was Changi Chapel in the Royal Military College at Duntroon. The chapel was removed from the POW camp in Malaysia in 1945 and rebuild in Canberra. The thoughts and imagery it produced in the staff and several students was a highlight. It represented the image of God within humanity for men to put effort into constructing a simple structure in the middle of a very horrible situation. It spoke of Hope and Faith in such a powerful way.
Some special mentions today
· Keegan for his display of facts and political knowledge, Southern Hills first Australian PM in 20-30 years!
· Tyler for his effort in our mock discussion and political debates
· Elise for her efforts in presenting her views in a mock debate about TV advertising to kids
· Finn K-P for her effort in a political debate
· Jennifer and Caleb for soldiering on through the Parliament House tour when they both felt unwell and wanted to just fall asleep.
· Sarah, TJ and Teagan for pressing on through their illness in the last 24 hours and really getting into the activities of the day.
We have appreciated the students putting in the effort to keep going even though their health has been a little challenged. We feel they have learnt quite a bit about what they are actually capable of in times of challenge. It is very rewarding as teachers and chaplain to share this time with your kids.
